Escape to the Dominican Republic with Sunwing Vacations

Dress available here

A few weeks ago my friend Mo from Miss Lion Hunter and I escaped to an amazing trip to the Dominican Republic with Sunwing Vacations. I don’t remember the last time I’ve had a girlfriend getaway, so this opportunity was definitely welcomed with open arms. I caught the travel bug at a young age since my mother worked for the tourism board of Mali and traveled around the world almost half of the year. Though I only have pictures to remember those days, I feel the best when I am away exploring other cultures or simply lying on the beach getting my melanin on point.

On that note let’s talk about that amazing trip I’ve raved about all week on Instagram. After spending the entire night packing, we arrived at Toronto’s Pearson Airport under a -15 weather all excited to check-in at the Sunwing Airlines Elite Plus counter. We opted for the Elite plus because of the priority check-in (avoided the long lines) and extra legroom. As a 5’11 that extra legroom was heaven!

From there, everything went smoothly until our arrival to the international airport of Punta Cana. Our private driver from Nexus Tours greeted us outside the airport and off we went! The drive between the airport and our resort was about 40 min.

The Resort

We stayed at CHIC Punta Cana, an adult-only all-inclusive resort located at the Uvero Alto beach. First impression as soon as we walked in the lobby? The property was super clean and breathtaking. Second, the staff was lovely and helpful. From that moment we knew that this was going to be a trip to remember. After checking-in at the designated Diamond club member lobby we headed to our room where welcome gifts (fruit platter and sparkling wine) awaited us. The Diamond Club offered us perks such as a butler service, private section of the beach with daybeds, access to the mermaid pool, upgraded room service menu, robes and slippers in-room, early check-in, check-out and much more.

Our first morning, we ventured around the property to check out all the amenities the resort has to offer. Walked along the beach, I must say we could not wait to finally step on the beautiful Dominican sand. Afterwards, we headed to Elements for a much needed buffet breakfast. The food is served just a few feet away from the beach. I don’t know about you but sipping on your morning coffee while listening to the waves crash on the shore sounds like the perfect vacation to me.

Beach/ Pool

While others were enjoying massages on the beach, others doing morning yoga in an amphitheater-styled stage, we decided to lay on the beach and soak some much needed sun. During the day we took full advantage of the 6 on-site themed bars all around the resort especially the swim-up bar. I will swim any day under the sun to order a virgin colada. Guests can choose between three swimming pools in the main area. They offer activities such as fitness classes, volleyball all toward the day. There is a foam party on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Tip: Wake up early if you want a good spot near the main pool especially during peek season

Food

Both Mo and I enjoy great food and entertainment, so at night we could not wait to enjoy some meals and dance the night away. Due to the all-inclusive nature of the resort most food options on the property are served buffet style. We had access to six different restaurants, five a la carte and one buffet. If you enjoy a Middle Eastern design and atmosphere, you will love Tagine Moroccan Cuisine. However, if you’re not one to venture out on food  Hunter Steak House and Vespa Italian Cuisine are perfect for some juicy steak and pasta respectively. The international buffet is also great with different selections every night (Dominican night on Wednesdays, seafood night on Fridays). The Culinary a la carte dining experience, considered as the seventh restaurant comes at an additional cost. Guests explore the best dishes and wines all selected by the chef. If I ever make it back to CHIC Punta Cana I will definitely try them.

Tip: Tips are included in your fees but it’s nice to tip your server or housekeeper if you receive a good service.

Entertainment/ Activities

We chose to stay in the resort during our stay, because our main goal for this trip was to relax. Guests are however free to go out of the resort and enjoy day trips.  If you’re the type of person who loves to party until the morning this is your resort. There are endless opportunities for entertainment during the day and at night. Guest can see the schedule of events for the day on the TVs in their room.  Every night there is a different kind of entertainment in the lobby. Guests can dance the night away in the Excite club, enjoy live performances from local singers or gamble in the Casino.

To enhance your experience even more stop by the Royal Spa if you have a few minutes. They offer a full service health facility with a hydrotherapy circuit and full range of massage, body and facial treatments. A couple massage by the beach sounds like life to me. Do note that the spa is extra and  fees are not included in the all inclusive package.

I had a time of life during this trip. So much laughter and memories created with my friend. Whether you’re escaping to CHIC Punta Cana for a couple,  girl or guy getaway, you will love every minute of your stay!
