Fun Family Getaway to Sherkston Shores Beach Resort and Campground

Before becoming a mother, I loved the freedom I had to jump in the car or on a plane for a last-minute getaway. Even though my travels are not as frequent or spontaneous post-kids, I take every chance I get to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city. Whether it’ll be a quick day trip near Toronto or a weekend getaway to Montreal, I never miss a chance.

We are so fortunate to be living in a province with a significant amount of family-friendly destinations. Today, I am taking you to Sherkston Shores, a beautiful resort just 90-minutes away from Toronto. This was our very first visit; it sure was the perfect way to start summer 2018.  Over the course of five days, our getaway included a bit of relaxing and a lot of adventures.

Sherkston Shores

Pro tip: All guests check-in at 4 PM. Make sure to either arrive a little bit before to beat the crowd.

 Accommodation At Sherkston Shores

Sherkston Shores is host to over 1700 campsites, RV sites, cottages, and cabins. Guest can rent for the week (Mon- Friday) or the weekend (Fri-Mon). For this trip, we wanted the kids to have their room, so we booked a Premium Cottage just a minute walk away from the beach – talk about convenience! It came with a huge deck, two bedrooms, a washroom, a fully equipped kitchen, central air, and a living area with a TV (Upgraded Cable and High-Speed Internet) and a pull-out couch. We also had a small charcoal barbecue at the back of the rental.

On the table in the living room, there is a book with all the information you need during your stay. Anything from phone numbers to different facilities on site, along with a list of places near the resort (restaurants, groceries, liquor stores). The cottage felt like home away from home. I was able to make meals from time to time. Also, the TV was perfect for entertaining the kids before and after the outdoor adventures.

Pro tip:  Our cottage did not have built-in laundry, but there are laundry facilities on-site in case you are staying longer than a week

.

After settling into our cottage, we set off to explore the resort. What’s a better way to go around than a golf cart? We rented one for 75 dollars a day. Though driving the golf cart was the easiest way to go around the resort it’s not necessary if your cottage is near the Family Funplex. We loved ours because we were able to hop from beach to beach and make easy runs to the grocery shop.

Pro tip: If you plan on walking around, please carry your map with you for at least the first two days.

What To Bring To Sherkston Shores

Once you book your cottage, make sure to read all the details before arriving. Knowing the kind of rental you booked will certainly help you pack. For instance, our premium cottage had clean towels and enough dish soap for our stay, but not all locations do. Some things I found essentials during our visit were toiletries, aluminum foil, garbage bags, paper towels, groceries, ice packs, first aid kit, bug repellent, loads of water, beach chairs and board games.

Pro Tip: If you are able to make it there during the week, the beaches and pools are less crowded.

Where to Eat

The last thing anyone wants to do while on vacation is cooking. I must, however, say that it’s a huge money saver. We brought some groceries and precooked meals. If you don’t feel like cooking, there is a vast Boston Pizza in the middle of the resort, along with an ice cream/coffee shop. Right at the back of the building, you will find a small grocery store with everything you need. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the prices where not hicked like they do at other resorts. Feel free to wander outside of the resort for some good local restaurants.

What to do

As previously mentioned, take advantage of the weekly program handed to you during your check-in because there is no shortage of fun for the entire family at Sherkston Shores. When we go on a summer family vacation having some water (pool, beach) is a must. The resort has two outdoor pools, kids splash zone, a hot tub, beach, water slides. While parents’ take a dip in the hot tub or hang out by the pool bar, kids can splash away in the pools. The highlight of the waterpark was definitely the waterslides. Though I got quickly tired of going up the hills, it’s the one activity that we enjoyed together as a family. Other activities to enjoy for free during your day include mini golf, tennis, volleyball, skating, fishing, biking, hiking, soccer and much more…

Pro Tip: If you are able to make it there during the week, the beaches and pools are less crowded.

For an additional fee, you can rent paddleboats, canoes, and kayaks. My kids did not get to try the rock climbing and trampoline due to the weather, but they are available. At night, the kids loved going to the arcade, but we also enjoyed the Family Animal Trivia on Monday, Chocolate Bar Bingo on Tuesday and live band on Wednesday. I must admit that I was impressed by the number of activities available on site.

Pro Tip: Most kids activities start at 10 AM so if your kids are early risers make sure to plan something for those hours.

If I was not able to convince you with the all family fun activities above, I hope this sunset is beautiful enough for you to pack your bag next week and make it to Sherkston Shores because the fun never stops!

We had an amazing time there and we cannot wait to go back again. Have you ever been to Sherkston Shores? What was your experience like?
