Sometimes the best adventures and most beautiful places are just a few hours away from home. Most days, I dream about long walks on sandy beaches in the Caribbean or a day exploring the souks of Marrakech.  The truth is, right here in our backyard and just a few hours away from Toronto, lies an amazing place called Grey County.

Let’s be honest, traveling overseas or down south can be expensive and with the low Canadian dollar, it makes sense to stay close to home. If you’ve never been to this side of Ontario, I am sure you’ll consider a little weekend getaway after reading today’s post.

 What to do in Grey County

As I go through hundreds of photos taken during this trip, I can’t help but be taken back by all the beautiful waterfalls, hiking paths, wineries, colorful scenic lookouts Grey County has to offer. Though I would love to give a comprehensive guide to everything there is do in Grey County a weekend was just not enough time. Here are a few things I did and loved.

Scandinave Spa

Start your weekend getaway with a little relaxation at the Scandinave Spa.This was my second time visiting an outdoor spa. I must say the hydrotherapy experience never gets old.  If you ever want to forget about your life problems for a day, get in touch with nature, cleanse your body and relax, this is it. This year-round Nordic spa sits on 25 acres surrounded by birch trees and has glorious scenic views of the Niagara Escarpment. Your experience begins the moment you enter the facility. The friendly staff made us feel welcome, took a quick tour of the place and off we went into deep relaxation mode. A stop by the Scandinave Spa is truly a mini vacation of his own.

Quick tips:

• Get there early to avoid the crowd.
• Be quiet at all time
• No cell phone use allowed during your experience ( unless it’s picture day ! )
• Reservation is needed for massages.

Walter’s Falls/ Inglis Falls

After your stop at the Scandivave Spa, head to one or two of the many falls in the Grey County area. Oh yes, people, Niagara Fall is not the only fall worth a visit in Ontario! Walter’s Falls is easily accessible by car and has a loop trail in case you’re up for some hiking. If not, check out the Falls Inn and Spa just across from it. This is a charming little place to stop for some snack, lunch or even an overnight stay. If the weather permits, ask to be seated in the balcony or by a window with a good view of the falls.

Quick tips

• The falls are on a private property. However, you are free to stop to check the falls and take some photos.
• Parking is free

Just a short drive from downtown Owen Sound, Inglis Falls is an absolute must see! With the amount of rainfall we had this year, the falls were even bigger during our visit. There are plenty of paths, picnic areas which make it a perfect place for nature lovers and the entire family.

• Use some bug repellent depending on the time of the year.
• Parking has a fee

Where to Eat

Coffin Ridge Winery

End your evening at Grey County’s first winery, Coffin Ridge. The picturesque views of this winery make it an oasis for wine lovers. While there, explore the stunning grounds of the vineyard and enjoy some wine samples, cheese platters indoor or outdoor. Don’t forget to take home a few bottles of Coffin Ridge signature wines.

• Don’t drink and drive!

Andrew’s Roots Restaurant

If you’re up for some casual-fine dining in the area, I highly recommend Andrew’s Roots Restaurant. It’s located right in the middle of downtown Meaford across from the Meaford Hall. Head there to enjoy some food made with fresh, local ingredients. I ordered the New York strip steak with roasted fingerling potatoes, sautéed spinach, brussels sprouts, double smoked bacon, caramelized onions and brandy jus. My mouth is watering all over again thinking about it. Unfortunately, because I had snacks not long before our dinner I was not able to try the dessert menu. I enjoyed the great food, cozy atmosphere, friendly service and the reasonable prices too.

Where to stay in Grey County

Irish Mountain Bed & Breakfast

After a long day of going around town, we made our way on to the Irish Mountain Bed and Breakfast in Meaford owned by the lovely couple: John, and Roberta. From the moment we arrived, they made us feel welcome and were happy to provide advice on things to see, do and places to eat at. Our room (the Lakeview room) had its own private sunroom, balcony, and 2-person hot tub; that and the most incredible view of the Georgian Bay. The highlight of our stay at this incredible place aside from the giant and comfortable bed was definitely the 5-star breakfast in the morning. Warm muffins, fresh cut fruits, and French Toast… oh my!  As much as I love kids friendly places, it’s important to get away as a couple from time to time. If you’re looking for a place away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this ticks all the boxes!

Quick Tips

• If you spend the night somewhere else you can still come and enjoy the view of the Georgian Bay with a quick stop at the Irish Mountain lookout. It’s only a short walk away from the B&B. Parking, Picnic Area, and washrooms are available for your convenience.
