How To Grow Your Own Herb Garden

We’ve been looking forward to getting outside this month to start gardening and enjoy our new lush green lawn in the backyard. Our plan was to start gardening in early mid-May, but due to my illness and somewhat longer winter that was not possible. I must admit that I do not know a lot about gardening and I have always been so envious of those who have a green thumb.  Since I partnered with Scotts Miracle Gro earlier this year to take care of our lawn, I thought this would be a great opportunity to start my own little herb garden. Cooking is a passion of mine, thus, I have spent a lot of time in the kitchen. There is something so satisfying and magical about walking out to grab herbs that you’ve have nurtured yourself.

As a beginner, I have made it my business over the last few weeks to learn about starting and caring for an herb garden. The good news is most herbs are easy to grow. All they require is watering when soil feels dry, about 4 hours of sun light and good soil like Nature’s Care® Organic & Natural Potting Mix with Water ConserveTM

Even though we’re already in August it’s not too late to start your own herb garden. If you have started your garden later in the year, like me, you can move your plants indoors during the cooler months. Here are a few easy-to-follow tips to help you start and maintain your own herb garden.

Pick the right planter.

Herbs can be grown in most pots, as long as there is a drainage hole. Nothing kills plants faster than too much water (learned the hard way). The planter I bought did not have any, but thanks to the use of a drill we easily made a few. The hole (holes) will allow easy flow of water.

 Potting Mix

Once you have selected your planter it’s time to find a good potting mix. For my little herb garden (which has peppermint, Onion Chives, and basil)  I used the  Nature’s Care® Organic & Natural Potting Mix with Water ConserveTM   . I have used other soils before and I can tell you right now that not all of them are created equally. Here are a few things I have learned that make this soil unique:

  • This product is well-suited to growing vegetables, herbs, and fruits in containers.
  • It feeds your little veggies or herbs for up to two months.
  • If you are guilty of over or under-watering the formulated potting mix is designed to absorb water like a sponge.
  • The Root-TrientsTM mix of Alfalfa Meal, Bone Meal, Earthworm Castings, and Kelp Meal provides essential nutrients that help plants build strong roots.
  • Contains yucca and coir which provide unique moisture control qualities.

Water and light

To keep your plants healthy a regular flow of water and sunlight is crucial. Your watering regimen should be highly dependent on how much sunlight your herbs are getting. Since my herbs are outside under direct sunlight and we have been getting a lot of rain as of late, I choose to water about every 2 days. The rule is simple, when the soil is dry, water it.

We find gardening not only a fun activity for the entire family but also a great way to learn about nature. I hope this post will inspire you to start your own little herb garden. Remember, you don’t need a green thumb, just the right product, and process.
